One thing I’m sure was true, the story in which the little baby boy starts crying at his baptism.  You are thinking:  true because unremarkable.  And it is, as is the rest of the story, in which all the other little babies start crying too.  The first crier, at this point, smiles brightly.  Again, you are thinking:  that happens at every baptism.  And yes, it happens often enough.  But liars tell mundane lies as well as fanciful ones and it is not necessarily a true story just because it is so ordinary.  Presenting ordinary as extraordinary was a sort of character trait.

This one was true because it was told.  As only that sort of baby grows up to tell that story.
